Direct answer: a botanical skincare ingredient is not identified by a common plant name alone. Evidence can be matched responsibly only after confirming the accepted species, plant part, preparation, extraction system, composition, exact cosmetic ingredient name and similarity between the studied material and the formula being discussed.

Why “contains [plant]” is not enough

A fruit extract, seed oil, leaf powder, flower water and root ferment from the same species can be chemically and functionally different materials. Even two extracts made from the same plant part may differ because of solvent, temperature, time, plant-to-solvent ratio, carrier and standardisation. Finished formulas add another layer: concentration, vehicle, pH, packaging and other ingredients influence performance.

This matters for journalists, formulators and consumers because research is frequently shortened to the plant’s common name. A study of a purified marker becomes “the plant is clinically proven.” A laboratory extract becomes evidence for every cosmetic bearing a related label name. The seven fields in a botanical identity record

1. Accepted species and synonyms

Start with genus and species, then check whether the name is currently accepted or a synonym. Kew’s Plants of the World Online provides taxonomic status and synonym information. This prevents common names from collapsing unrelated species and helps reconcile an older paper with current nomenclature. Taxonomy verifies identity; it does not establish cosmetic efficacy.

2. Plant part

Record fruit, seed, leaf, flower, root, bark, stem, whole plant or another stated part. Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) assessments often separate multiple ingredients derived from a single species because the plant part changes the material. For example, a seed oil is not interchangeable with a fruit extract merely because both names begin with the same species.

3. Preparation type

“Extract” is only one preparation. Oils may be expressed or solvent-derived; waters may be distillates or aqueous preparations; powders may be milled plant material; ferments involve microorganisms and substrates; juices and essential oils have their own identities. The preparation word is part of the ingredient, not decorative label copy.

4. Extraction and processing system

Record solvent or carrier, extraction ratio, temperature, duration and relevant purification or drying steps when available. A water extract and a methanolic research extract can concentrate different constituents. CIR’s safety review of mallow, for example, describes a methanolic whole-plant extraction method—details that limit how broadly the result can be transferred.

5. Composition and standardisation

Natural complex substances may contain many constituents. Useful records include analytical markers, ranges, known allergens, residual solvent, carrier content and methods used to characterise the material. “Standardised” is incomplete unless the marker and specification are named. A marker confirms a defined analytical target; it does not prove the ingredient produces a clinical outcome.

6. Exact cosmetic ingredient identity

Match the supplier specification and label declaration to an established cosmetic name. The European Commission’s CosIng glossary compiles common cosmetic ingredient names for EU labelling, while FDA explains US naming expectations and notes that botanical INCI-style Latin terms may accompany common or usual names. Jurisdiction matters: an INCI name is a nomenclature tool, not regulatory approval or evidence of safety by itself.

7. Evidence match

Finally, compare the study material with the marketed ingredient: same species, part, extraction, composition, dose and vehicle? If several fields are unknown, narrow the wording. “A laboratory extract showed…” is more accurate than “this botanical transforms skin.” Finished-product results require finished-product evidence.

Worked examples

Kakadu plum

“Kakadu plum” commonly refers to Terminalia ferdinandiana, but fruit powder, aqueous fruit extract and standardised commercial extract are not automatically interchangeable. Rice ferment

A fixed seed oil is chemically different from a volatile essential oil and from a solvent extract. Five common botanical identity traps

  1. Common-name substitution: two plants share a market name, so evidence for one species is assigned to the other.
  2. Plant-part collapse: research on fruit is cited for seed oil, leaf extract or bark powder.
  3. Solvent blindness: an alcohol or methanol extract used in research is treated as equivalent to an aqueous cosmetic extract.
  4. Marker inflation: detecting a constituent becomes a claim that the finished product contains a clinically meaningful or stable amount.
  5. Supplier-to-product transfer: a raw-material study is presented as proof of the marketed formula without matching concentration, vehicle or finished-product testing.

A sixth trap is chronological: labels, taxonomic names and supplier specifications can change. Record the version and date of every identity document, then check whether the current formula still uses the same material.
