Package price is a poor value comparison when products differ in size, dosage, frequency and waste. A 50 g moisturiser can cost less per application than a 100 g jar if the larger format is routinely over-dispensed or expires unfinished. Keep the units identical. Divide millilitres by millilitres, grams by grams, or counted units by counted units. Do not divide a 30 mL label by a 0.3 g application unless you have a defensible density conversion. For most at-home checks, weighing the closed container before and after use is more reliable than assuming one pump has a standard volume.

V — Verified net content
Start with the declared net quantity—not the apparent bottle size, shipping weight or a retailer’s informal description. Packaging can make containers look larger or smaller than the product inside. If comparing two products, convert to the same unit first: 50 mL versus 30 mL, or 50 g versus 30 g.
A — Amount per application
The label’s directions control. “Two pumps” is a count, not a universal mass: pump outputs vary by component and product viscosity. To calibrate, weigh a container, dispense ten normal pumps, weigh again and divide the difference by ten. Repeating several times reveals dispensing variation. For droppers, do not assume a full dropper equals 1 mL unless the brand states and supports it.
L — Loss allowance
Not every labelled gram becomes a usable application. Product can remain in a pump, cling to a jar, spill or become unusable after its recommended period after opening. Use a transparent allowance—0% for theoretical comparison, or a measured percentage from an emptied pack. Never quietly subtract an arbitrary loss merely to make one product look worse.
U — Usage frequency
Cost per use and cost per month answer different questions. A higher-cost weekly exfoliant may have a lower monthly burden than a low-cost twice-daily product. Frequency must follow directions and tolerability; it should not be increased to “improve value.”
E — Effective price
Use the amount paid after a genuine discount, excluding unrelated basket savings. For subscriptions, include mandatory fees. For international comparisons, record tax and essential delivery charges separately so readers can reproduce the calculation.

How to compare formats fairly
Pumps versus droppers
Counted pumps are convenient once calibrated. Droppers vary with squeeze pressure, angle and liquid level. Record the mean of multiple applications, not the smallest possible drop, and state whether you measured one layer or a complete routine application.
Jars versus airless containers
Packaging can affect usable remainder and contamination exposure, but a packaging format alone does not prove better efficacy. If waste matters to the comparison, measure the finished container rather than assigning a presumed percentage to every jar or pump.
Concentrates versus larger bottles
A lower dose can improve cost per use only when the label supports that dose and the formula is intended for it. Concentration percentages are not interchangeable across ingredients or formulas. Sensitivity analysis: stop pretending one estimate is exact
A single cost-per-use number can create false precision. A better comparison shows how the result changes when dosage or loss changes. For a 30 mL product costing ₹1,800, using 0.25 mL with no loss produces 120 uses and ₹15 per use. Using 0.30 mL with 10% loss produces 90 uses and ₹20 per use. Using 0.40 mL with 10% loss produces 67.5 uses and about ₹26.67 per use. The purchase price did not change; the behavioural assumptions did.
Editors should therefore publish a central estimate and a reasonable range. Label the low and high scenarios rather than presenting the most flattering case. This is especially important when the application instruction is qualitative—“a small amount,” “a few drops” or “apply generously.” If a product is shared by household members, include total applications rather than calendar days.

What cost per use cannot tell you
Cost arithmetic does not measure safety, sensory preference, stability, compatibility, adherence or effectiveness. A cheaper application that a person dislikes and abandons may deliver worse practical value. Nor can price per gram compare fundamentally different functions: cleanser and sunscreen do different jobs. Evaluate value only after deciding whether the product category and evidence fit the need.

The calculator uses labelled content, user-observed dosage, an explicit loss allowance and actual price. Example numbers are hypothetical illustrations. Rounding occurs only after the final calculation. Taxes and shipping are excluded unless the comparison states otherwise.
