Direct answer: A skincare ingredient can appear under a formal label name, a common English name, a botanical Latin name, a regional name, a chemical synonym, a salt or ester, or a supplier trade name. Some pairs describe the same material; others describe related but meaningfully different ingredients. The safest way to decode a label is to preserve the exact declared term and identify the relationship before transferring benefits, risks or research.

Why skincare ingredient names are confusing
Ingredient naming has to serve regulators, formulators, manufacturers and consumers at the same time. The European Union uses a glossary of common ingredient names informed by internationally recognised nomenclatures, including INCI. In the United States, the FDA requires ingredients to use names established or adopted by regulation and explains that common or usual names can differ from the Latin-forward forms familiar on international packs.
Marketing adds another layer. “Cica,” “vitamin C,” “vitamin E,” “rice ferment,” “mineral sunscreen” and supplier-owned filter names can be useful shorthand, but they may hide distinctions that matter for evidence and tolerance.

Why derivatives are not “fake” versions
A derivative is a chemically related ingredient designed or selected for particular formulation properties. It may be more soluble, more stable or easier to use in a certain vehicle. That does not automatically make it better or worse. It means the evidence question changes.
For example, ascorbic acid, 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid and ascorbyl glucoside all sit within vitamin C marketing, but they are different molecules. Tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate sit within vitamin E marketing, but remain distinct label identities. Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate are related acid and salt forms; their behaviour also depends strongly on molecular weight and formula.

Botanical names: species is only the beginning
Latin botanical naming can help distinguish plants, but a label may also need to identify the part used and the material type: leaf extract, root extract, seed oil, fruit extract, juice or water. These are not interchangeable preparations.
“Kakadu plum” is therefore less precise than Terminalia Ferdinandiana Fruit Extract, but even the latter does not state the extract ratio, solvent, standardisation or measured vitamin C content. Can ingredient order reveal the percentage?
Not reliably. The FDA’s current cosmetics-labeling summary states that U.S. cosmetic ingredients are generally declared in descending order of predominance, while colour additives and ingredients present at one percent or less can follow different ordering rules. Other markets have their own requirements. Even where descending order applies, the list provides a sequence—not the exact concentration.
That means “ingredient X appears third” cannot be converted into a precise percentage without manufacturer data. It also means two formulas with similar lists can differ in raw-material grade, processing, pH, packaging and sensory profile.
The five-step label check
- Copy the exact term. Preserve spelling, slashes and botanical plant parts.
- Classify the relationship. Is the familiar name a synonym, botanical translation, derivative, salt, ester, abbreviation or trade name?
- Confirm function in context. An ingredient can serve different roles in different products.
- Check market restrictions. UV filters, colours, preservatives and other materials can be regulated differently across jurisdictions.
- Keep evidence attached. Do not move a study from one derivative, concentration or vehicle to another without justification.
Worked example: decoding a multi-active night serum
The ingredient declaration for GlowBareSkin’s LumiSkin Night Elixir includes Bakuchiol, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Retinyl Palmitate, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, D-Panthenol and Tocopherol. A flat marketing translation might call these “retinol alternative, vitamin B3, HA, vitamin A, vitamin C, provitamin B5 and vitamin E.”
The formal list is more useful. It shows that hyaluronic acid and its sodium salt both appear; the vitamin A material is retinyl palmitate rather than retinol; the vitamin C material is an ethylated derivative; and the vitamin E material is tocopherol rather than tocopheryl acetate. Those distinctions affect how research should be retrieved and interpreted. They do not, by themselves, prove the finished product’s clinical efficacy.

The table is selective, not exhaustive. Nomenclature can be updated; regional requirements differ; supplier blends can contain multiple declared ingredients; and botanical preparations can vary despite similar names. This resource cannot determine concentration, purity, particle size, molecular weight, extraction solvent, allergen content, stability or finished-product performance from a name alone.
Frequently asked questions
Is INCI the same in every country?
No. INCI is internationally influential, but local regulations determine the acceptable declaration. The FDA, for example, provides specific U.S. naming guidance.
Are glycerin and glycerol the same?
They are names used for the same chemical substance in different contexts, though cosmetic labels must still follow applicable naming rules.
Are hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate the same?
They are closely related but not identical: sodium hyaluronate is a sodium salt of hyaluronic acid.
Is tocopheryl acetate just another spelling of vitamin E?
No. It is a specific ester derivative within vitamin E-related ingredients and should be distinguished from tocopherol.
