This guide maps the types of hyaluronic acid consumers actually see on labels and separates identity from marketing shorthand. It focuses on topical cosmetics, not injectable fillers, mesotherapy or medical wound products.
First: what is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid—also called hyaluronan—is a linear glycosaminoglycan made of repeating sugar units. It occurs naturally in human tissues and has strong water-binding and viscoelastic properties. In cosmetics, hyaluronates are used mainly as skin-conditioning, humectant or aqueous viscosity-support ingredients, depending on the exact INCI identity.
The family contains different salts and derivatives. Molecular chains can also vary greatly in size. A 2023 Cosmetic Ingredient Review safety assessment describes cosmetic hyaluronic-acid materials spanning broad molecular-weight ranges and distinguishes the acid, salts, hydrolyzed materials and an acetylated derivative. That breadth is exactly why “contains hyaluronic acid” is not a complete formulation description.
INCI tells you which hyaluronate is present. It usually does not tell you the molecular-weight distribution, supplier grade, concentration or delivery behaviour.

Hyaluronic Acid vs Sodium Hyaluronate
Sodium Hyaluronate is the sodium salt of Hyaluronic Acid. Both belong to the same chemical family, and both can be produced in different molecular-weight grades. The widespread claim that Sodium Hyaluronate always has a lower molecular weight—and therefore always penetrates deeper—is too broad. Salt form and chain length are separate variables.
A manufacturer can supply high- or low-molecular-weight sodium hyaluronate. Likewise, the generic INCI “Hyaluronic Acid” does not encode one fixed size. To compare two formulas meaningfully, you would need supplier specifications, molecular-weight distribution, concentration, vehicle and study data.
What does molecular weight change?
Molecular weight is commonly expressed in daltons (Da) or kilodaltons (kDa). Longer chains generally behave differently from shorter fragments in viscosity, film formation and interaction with the skin surface. Experimental penetration work using human skin has found that lower-molecular-weight materials reached greater measured depths than higher-molecular-weight materials under the specific study conditions, while much of the applied material remained concentrated near the stratum corneum.
That result supports a gradient, not a universal promise. Penetration depends on the test method, dose, vehicle, skin model, exposure time and exact molecular distribution. Reaching a measured epidermal depth also does not automatically mean a superior visible outcome.
Are “high,” “low” and “ultra-low” standardized?
No universal consumer-facing boundary is used consistently across cosmetic marketing. One supplier’s “low molecular weight” may not match another’s. A 2025 review categorized topical forms across published work, but product labels still rarely disclose a verified kDa range. Treat these descriptors as meaningful only when a numeric specification and source are provided.
What the human studies show
A 2011 clinical study tested 0.1% hyaluronic-acid cream formulations of different molecular weights and reported improvements in hydration and elasticity across formulations, with wrinkle-depth findings differing by molecular weight. A 2024 randomized trial compared topical products containing different molecular-weight hyaluronic acids in aging skin and reported hydration-related differences. These studies support topical utility, but they do not prove that the smallest available material is always best.
Important limitations include small samples, finished formulas containing other ingredients, relatively short durations and commercial involvement in parts of the literature. The tested product—not a single INCI name—produced the measured result.

- E — Exact INCI: Which acid, salt, hydrolysate, acetylated form or crosspolymer is used?
- I — Intervention tested: Was the finished formula tested, or only a supplier ingredient?
- G — Grade and source: Are fermentation source, purity and supplier specification relevant and documented?
- H — Hydration context: What other humectants, emollients and occlusives support the formula?
- T — Test endpoint: Was the outcome immediate hydration, transepidermal water loss, elasticity, wrinkle appearance or penetration?
Why more types are not automatically better
A formula listing four hyaluronates is not automatically four times more hydrating than one listing a single well-chosen grade. Ingredient count ignores dose, redundancy, solvent system and the rest of the moisturizer architecture. Glycerin, panthenol, emollients, ceramides and occlusive components may materially influence comfort and water retention.

Frequently asked questions
Which type of hyaluronic acid is best?
There is no universally best type. High-molecular-weight materials can support surface film and hydration; lower-molecular-weight materials may distribute differently. A balanced formula and relevant product testing matter more than a single label claim.
Is Sodium Hyaluronate better than Hyaluronic Acid?
Not inherently. Sodium Hyaluronate is a salt form used widely in cosmetics. Either name can represent different molecular-weight grades and formula contexts.
Does hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid penetrate deeper?
Hydrolysis indicates chain breakdown, but the INCI name does not provide the resulting molecular-weight distribution. Deeper measured distribution requires evidence for the actual grade and formulation.
Can hyaluronic acid dry out skin?
HA is a humectant family, but a lightweight humectant-only layer may feel insufficient for some people. Applying moisturizer over it, using it on slightly damp skin when appropriate and supporting the barrier can improve comfort.
Are crosslinked hyaluronates the same as fillers?
No. A topical cosmetic crosspolymer and an injectable dermal filler are different products, exposure routes and regulatory contexts. Injectable evidence should not be used to advertise a topical cosmetic.
Methodology and limitations
This guide combines regulatory ingredient definitions, a cosmetic safety assessment, human topical studies and a recent literature review. It does not rank proprietary supplier grades, and it does not infer molecular weight from an ingredient’s position on a label. Studies use heterogeneous formulas, outcomes and time points, so their results were not pooled.
