Beauty reporting often starts with an ingredient name but quickly moves across unlike substances. “Vitamin C” can mean ascorbic acid or several derivatives. “Vitamin A” can mean retinol, retinyl palmitate or a prescription retinoid. “Hyaluronic acid” can refer to materials with different molecular weights. When those identities blur, citations become portable in ways the research never intended.
These fact sheets are designed for deadline use. They do not replace a full literature review or GlowBareSkin’s ingredient-specific evidence libraries. They provide the minimum identity, role, research scope and wording caution needed before a writer follows the evidence deeper. Ingredient names can be cross-checked in the INCI alias database, while studies can be traced with the citation finder.
The SOURCE-6 fact-sheet standard
- Substance: Record the exact INCI name or chemical form.
- Official role: Separate recognised cosmetic functions from advertising outcomes.
- Use context: Note rinse-off or leave-on, formula type, concentration when disclosed and application schedule.
- Research match: Identify whether the source tested a molecule, raw material or finished formula.
- Claim boundary: State the endpoint and what cannot be transferred.
- Evidence date: Include the review date and direct primary-source links.
SOURCE-6 is not an evidence score. A function database can verify that an ingredient is used as a humectant, but it cannot prove a finished moisturiser delivers a specific percentage increase in hydration. A randomised trial can test a formula under defined conditions, but it does not automatically validate every formula containing one highlighted ingredient.

Fact sheet 1: Glycerin
Identity: Glycerin, also called glycerol in scientific literature. Common cosmetic role: humectant and skin-conditioning ingredient. The European Commission’s CosIng function vocabulary is useful for checking recognised cosmetic roles, while product-specific claims still need product-specific support.
Evidence scope: Glycerol is closely involved in stratum-corneum hydration and barrier-related biology. Reviews and experimental work discuss water binding and endogenous glycerol pathways, but a general mechanism does not disclose how any finished formula behaves in a particular climate.
Editorial wording: “Glycerin is a humectant used to attract and retain water within a formulation and the outer skin.” Avoid “pulls moisture from the air into skin in every condition” or assigning a hydration duration without a finished-product test.
Fact sheet 2: Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate
Identity: Hyaluronic acid and its sodium salt are related but label-distinct materials. Molecular weight, crosslinking and chemical modification can change physical behaviour. The label may not disclose every size fraction.
Evidence scope: Topical studies have tested particular hyaluronic-acid fragments and formulations for hydration, elasticity or wrinkle-related endpoints. Editorial wording: “Hyaluronic acid is a water-binding polysaccharide used as a humectant in skincare.” Avoid saying every molecular size penetrates deeply or that all HA formulas deliver the same outcome.
Fact sheet 3: Niacinamide
Identity: Niacinamide, also called nicotinamide, is an amide form of vitamin B3. It is not the same substance as niacin, and cosmetic labelling should be read using the exact INCI name.
Evidence scope: Tanno and colleagues studied cultured human keratinocytes and topical use in dry skin, reporting effects on stratum-corneum lipids and transepidermal water loss. Editorial wording: “Niacinamide has molecule-specific research relevant to barrier lipids and several cosmetic appearance endpoints.” Do not convert an ingredient paper into proof for every niacinamide serum or imply that a higher percentage is automatically superior.
Fact sheet 4: Panthenol
Identity: Panthenol is a provitamin B5 ingredient; dexpanthenol refers to a specific stereoisomer used in research and products. Labels and papers should be checked for the exact material.
Evidence scope: A randomised study by Proksch and Nissen examined a dexpanthenol-containing cream after experimentally induced irritation and measured barrier repair, hydration and inflammation-related outcomes. That design is informative for the tested cream and model, not a universal treatment claim.
Editorial wording: “Panthenol is used as a humectant and skin-conditioning ingredient; dexpanthenol-containing formulas have been studied in defined barrier models.” Avoid presenting panthenol as a medical treatment or assigning one cream’s results to another product.
Fact sheet 5: Tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate
Identity: Tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate are related vitamin E forms but not interchangeable label names. The ester form must be converted before behaving like free tocopherol biologically; stability and formulation differ.
Evidence scope: Vitamin E research includes antioxidant mechanisms, combinations with other antioxidants and topical exposure studies. Editorial wording: “Tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate are vitamin E ingredients used for antioxidant or skin-conditioning roles, depending on form and formula.” Avoid “erases scars,” “replaces sunscreen” or “works identically in every derivative.”
Fact sheet 6: Bakuchiol
Identity: Bakuchiol is a defined meroterpene associated with the plant Psoralea corylifolia; it is not a retinoid and should not be called a plant retinol as a chemical identity.
Evidence scope: A prospective, randomised, double-blind study compared specified topical bakuchiol and retinol regimens for facial photoageing endpoints. The trial supports discussion of those tested products and schedule, while the broader evidence base remains smaller than the retinoid literature.
Editorial wording: “Bakuchiol is a non-retinoid cosmetic ingredient studied in limited human trials for appearance-related endpoints.” Avoid claiming universal equivalence to prescription retinoids or transferring a comparator trial to every bakuchiol product. See the three-way evidence centre.
Fact sheet 7: Retinol and retinyl palmitate
Identity: Retinol is an alcohol form of vitamin A; retinyl palmitate is an ester. They sit within the vitamin A family but differ in conversion pathway, stability, use levels and evidence. Neither should be silently substituted for a prescription retinoid.
Evidence scope: Retinol has vehicle-controlled human research for specific ageing-related endpoints. The EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety evaluates aggregate vitamin A exposure and ingredient forms in safety assessment. Safety opinions do not prove efficacy, and one form’s efficacy data do not transfer to another.
Editorial wording: Name the exact form: “retinol” or “retinyl palmitate.” Avoid a single “retinoid strength ladder” that treats molecule name, percentage and product performance as the same variable.
Fact sheet 8: Vitamin C derivatives
Identity: Sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl glucoside, 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate and ascorbyl palmitate are distinct substances. They should not be cited as though “vitamin C derivative” were one tested molecule.
Evidence scope: A randomised controlled trial studied a 5% sodium ascorbyl phosphate lotion for acne-related endpoints. Research on other derivatives uses different models and outcomes. GlowBareSkin’s vitamin C derivative evidence database records those differences.
Editorial wording: “This formula contains [exact derivative], which has its own stability and evidence profile.” Do not use an ascorbic-acid paper to substantiate a derivative or one derivative’s result to represent the whole family.

Copy these fields: INCI name; common synonym; official cosmetic function; tested material; formula and concentration if disclosed; study design; participants or model; comparator; endpoint; duration; result magnitude; funding; limitations; primary link; review date; safe editorial wording.
If a field is not public, mark it “not reported.” Do not infer concentration from list position, convert a lab mechanism into a visible benefit or describe an ingredient as clinically proven without specifying what was tested.

Can a writer call an ingredient “clinically proven”?
Only with clear context about the tested material, design and endpoint. The phrase alone can imply broader proof than the source provides.
Are INCI names and common names interchangeable?
Sometimes a synonym is clear, but salts, esters and derivatives can be different substances. Preserve the label name whenever possible.
Does an official cosmetic function prove efficacy?
No. It describes how an ingredient may function in cosmetics; a product outcome needs evidence matched to the claim.
May editors reuse the chart?
